Lens Impression
1953年（昭和28年）にZUNOW(ズノー)50mmF1.1（ピンポン玉）が発売され、世界最高速のライカマウントレンズとして世界を驚かせた。そこから日本のカメラメーカーの大口径競争がスタートする。翌1954年にはヘキサノン60ｍｍｆ1.2、そしてこのフジノン5cmｆ1.2が矢継ぎ早に発売された。また2年後の1956年にはNIKONから50ｍｍｆ1.1が発売されている。NIKONは変形ガウスタイプだが、それ以外はゾナータイプを継承している。
ズノーがピンポン玉の使いにくさと、新種ガラスを多用したこのフジノン5ｃｍｆ1.2の描写に圧倒されて、改良型の開発・発売（1955年）を進めていったのは有名なエピソードのようだ。
富士写真フィルム 土居良一氏は、この50ｍｍｆ1.2という高性能レンズの開発について、1955年写真工業誌で以下のように語っている。
(1)まずゾリノン50ｍｍｆ1.5を設計し、試作（日本特許191452)
① ガウス型レンズをゾナー的にして、その接合面に十分な屈折作用を与えることによって、高次の球面収差とコマ収差を除き、
② ガウス型本来の色収差の補正力を生かす。
(2)次に、在来ガラスのままで、ｆ1.3への拡大を図り、
(3)新種ガラスによる9枚構成としたｆ1.2の試作を行い、
(4)その後さらに改良し、8枚構成でより高性能の50ｍｍｆ1.2を完成させた。
その特徴は、
① ゾナーの第三群（最後群）の前方の形状を変更し、中央の空気間隔を両凸形状とする。
② ゾナーの第三群（最後群）の後方にさらにレンズを追加し、その間を収斂性の空気レンズとする。
というゾナーの改良という側面からの見方と、
① ダブルガウスの中央の第2,3群を2枚貼り合せから、3枚貼り合せに変更して、より有効な収差補正を実現した。
というダブルガウスからの視点の双方を取りうる。

通常フジノン5ｃｍｆ1.2はライカＬマウントであうが、このレンズはニコンＳマウントのもの。生産された数は不明だが、かなり少ないと思われる。
描写はズノーと比較すると、とてもクリアであり、同時期のレンズとは思えないくらいだ。特にピント部分の抜けが素晴らしい。バックのボケは結構癖が残っている。ボケ味から推定すると非点収差のぐるぐるや、コマ収差の流れよりは、球面収差の補正が不足していることによる特徴が強く感じられる。
Zunow 50mmF1.1 (so called ‘table tennis ball’) was released in 1953 and
surprised the world as the fastest Leica mount lens in the world. The competition
of the fastest lens of Japanese camera makers starts from that point. Hexanon
60mmf1.2 and this Fujinon 5cmf1.2 were released into the market quickly
in following 1954. In addition, 50mmf1.1 is released in two years later
of 1956 through NIKON. Although NIKON is a modified gauss type, the Sonnar
type is adopted for other lenses.
It seems to be a famous episode that Zunow was overwhelmed by the description of Fujinon 5cmf1.2 which used lenses made from ‘new generation glasses’ and also by the difficulty of usage of the lens shape so called ‘table tennis ball’, and forced to advance development of new type and released in 1955. Although Fujinon 5cmf1.2 is in Leica L mount usually, this lens has a NIKON-S mount. Total number of production of this type is unknown but it seems there are quite few.
Description is very clear as compared with Zunow, and difficult to consider these are in almost the same period. Especially the transparency around the focus part is wonderful. Presuming from the taste of bokeh, I think some shortage of the correction of spherical aberration appears more characteristics on photos than the swirling bokeh from astigmatism or the flow by the comatic aberration.
